My name is Brad Redden, I am running for the District 10 council position.
I grew up in Hants County and then earned a Bachelor of Science in geology from St. Mary’s University. I have since worked as a geologist and carpenter across Canada, from Labrador to Vancouver Island. In 2017, I moved back to Nova Scotia with my partner so she could complete a Master’s degree at Dalhousie University and this past January we moved to Lawrencetown.
The lack of rural internet has been a pressing issue for over 15 years and while there are some concrete signs of preparation for some new installations, there still remains a number of County residents who will not be afforded the same level of internet service when it is all said and done.
If elected, can you commit to advocating for the same level of service for all residents, including “final mile” residents? Yes or No
As one of the younger candidates, and someone who has worked in extremely remote parts of Canada, I understand how essential good internet service is. I support delivering internet to all residents in the county, and by the method that makes the most sense for the individual household. That may mean services have to be delivered several ways.
Annapolis County elects 11 councillors for a population of approximately 19,000. The councillors then elect a warden from amongst themselves. Total remuneration is $405,062.
Kings County elects 9 councillors for a population of approximately 49,000. Since 2016 a mayor has been elected by the population at large. Total remuneration is $392,688.
1) Do you support a review of the number of councillors required for Annapolis County? Yes!!!
2) Do you support having a mayor elected by the population at large? Yes
What ideas or plans do you have for constructive community engagement?
Currently residents can only address council via zoom. Large portions of the county don’t have sufficient internet access to participate from home. I believe that if this is to continue to be the only way to engage council we need a physical location for residents to access so they can participate in the zoom council meetings.Similarly the videos of council meetings should be broken into smaller segments for download.
What do you see as the top three priorities for Annapolis County, and how do you plan to address them?
